Born and raised in Sterling, NY, Edward Johnson developed a deep love for horses from a young age, influenced by his "City Girl Mom" who had a penchant for equine companions. After immersing himself in the world of horsemanship through 4-H and formal training at the Oklahoma Horseshoeing School in 1991, Edward returned home to Sterling to embark on a fulfilling career as a certified farrier. Throughout the years, Edward remained dedicated to sharing his expertise and passion for horses with others, volunteering for 4-H programs to educate children on every aspect of horsemanship. However, life took an unexpected turn in 2018 when Edward met his now-wife, Lori, and relocated to Glenfield, NY.
Glenfield's proximity to the Otter Creek Trail System, a 65-mile trail through the Adirondacks, presented Edward with a new opportunity to serve the equestrian community. Recognizing the lack of tack shops in the area and the recurring needs of fellow riders for supplies and equipment, Edward had a "light bulb" moment: why not open his own tack shop? With the support of Lori and guidance from organizations like Naturally Lewis and the Onondaga Watertown SBDC, Edward embarked on the journey of entrepreneurship. The SBDC helped Edward develop a comprehensive business plan and financial projections, laying the groundwork for The Tack Shop's success. Through networking with horse-related businesses and groups, Edward gained valuable insights and referrals, ensuring that The Tack Shop would meet the needs of the local equestrian community. With a grant from Naturally Lewis, The Tack Shop became a reality, opening its doors in May 2023. Today, The Tack Shop serves as a hub for equestrians near and far, offering a wide range of equine supplies and necessities. In addition to their retail offerings, Edward provides emergency shoeing and trimming services, further solidifying his commitment to supporting riders in need. Looking ahead, The Tack Shop continues to evolve, with plans to expand its presence through mobile operations and participation in away horse shows. Edward Johnson's journey from farrier to business owner is a testament to the transformative power of passion, perseverance, and community support.
